An Assembly bill that offers tax relief for San Diegans recovering from this year’s fires was unanimously approved by the state Legislature on Friday and sent to Gov. Jerry Brown for approval.

AB 122, sponsored by Assemblyman Brian Maienschein (R-San Diego), would allow homeowners and business owners who suffered a loss due to the wildfires to claim a deduction on their previous year’s tax returns, which will expedite payment for their losses.

“The fires that raged across San Diego County left the lives of thousands of residents and small business owners turned upside down,” Maienschein said. “I am thankful for the governor’s support during that time, and I am hopeful he will sign this legislation to provide additional financial relief to San Diegans still struggling to get back on their feet.”

Gov. Brown has until Sept. 30 to sign bills approved by the Legislature.
