Forbes magazine’s annual tally of America’s wealthiest people identified 37 fortunes from Southern California on the much-discussed Forbes 400 list.

The local list of the mega-wealthy — net worth tabulated by the magazine’s staff — includes Jack and Laura Dangermond, 71, from Redlands, ranked No. 204. The owners of Esri mapping software are worth $3.2 billion, according to Forbes.

The list was topped by Donald Bren, 84, from Newport Beach. Forbes estimated the worth of the real estate giant Irvine Co.’s owner at $15.2 billion, the nation’s 27th largest fortune.

SoCal’s second-wealthiest person was Elon Musk, who ranked 34th nationally. The 45-year-old inventor from Los Angeles had a hand in the development of PayPal, Tesla Motors, SolarCity and SpaceX. He’s worth an estimated $11.6 billion.

Southern Californians on the Forbes 400 include local philanthropist Eli Broad (ranked 58th nationally), media giants David Geffen (No. 73), Steven Spielberg (No. 156) and Oprah Winfrey (No. 239) plus two twenty-something executives from the mobile phone hit app, Snapchat.

The 38 fortunes that Forbes listed as from Southern California control a combined $156.5 billion. That’s money equal to roughly the Wall Street values of Home Depot, Pepsico, IBM or Walt Disney Co.

The other 36 Southern Californians on the Forbes list, with their national ranking:

No. 47 is Patrick Soon-Shiong, 64, from Los Angeles. The pharmaceutical entrepreneur is worth $9.2 billion.

No. 58 is Broad, 83, from Los Angeles. The retired homebuilder and insurance executive is worth $7.4 billion.

No. 73 is Geffen, 73, from Malibu. The media mogul is worth $6.7 billion.

Tied at 90th are Kingston Technology co-founders: David Sun, 64, from Irvine and John Tu, 75, from Rolling Hills. Each is worth $5.3 billion.

No. 110 is Edward Roski, Jr., 77, from Los Angeles. The developer is worth $4.9 billion.

No. 117 is Sumner Redstone, 93, from Beverly Hills. The media mogul is worth $4.7 billion. Tied with Redstone at 117 is Tamara Gustavson, 54, from Malibu. The daughter of Public Service self-store founder is worth $4.7 billion.

No. 120 is Steven Rales, 65, from Santa Barbara. The manufacturer Danaher Corp. chairman is worth $4.6 billion.

No. 134 is Jeffrey Skoll, 51, from Los Angeles. The eBay executive turned philanthropist and film producer is worth $4.1 billion.

No. 142 is a couple, Stewart and Lynda Resnick, from Beverly Hills. They run farming and packaged foods businesses worth $4 billion.

At 156 is Spielberg, 69, from Pacific Palisades. The media mogul is worth $3.7 billion. He’s tied at 156 with Rick Caruso, 57, from Brentwood.

At 184 is Michael Milken, 70, from Los Angeles. The investor is worth $3.5 billion. He’s tied with Steven Udvar-Hazy, 70, the aircraft leasing executive from Beverly Hills.

Controversial former L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling, 82, from Beverly Hills, was ranked 190th at $3.4 billion. He was tied with hotel magnate Anthony Pritzker, 55, from Los Angeles.

No. 194 is Tom Gores, 52, from Beverly Hills. The investor is worth $3.3 billion.

At 214th is Henry Samueli, 62, from Newport Beach. The chipmaker Broadcom co-founder and Anaheim Ducks owner is worth $3.1 billion. He’s tied with Kieu Hoang, 72, from Westlake Village. The medical products executive is worth $3.1 billion.

No. 222 is Do Won and Jin Sook Chang, 60, from Beverly Hills. Their Forever 21 fashion retail chain is worth $3 billion.

No. 232 is Haim Saban, 71, from Beverly Hills. The children’s TV pioneer is worth $2.9 billion.

No. 239 is Winfrey, 62, from Montecito. The TV entertainer and magazine publisher is worth $2.8 billion.

No. 246 is A. Jerrold Perenchio, 85, from Bel Air. The former Univision chairman is worth $2.7 billion.

No. 264 is David Murdock, 93, from Ventura. The real estate giant tied to the Dole fruit empire is worth $2.6 billion.

No. 274 is Henry Nicholas, III., 56, from Newport Coast. The chipmaker Broadcom co-founder is worth $2.5 billion. He’s tied with Don Hankey, 73, an auto-loan executive from Malibu.

No. 290 is Bill Gross, 72, from Laguna Beach. The famed bond trader is worth $2.4 billion.

No. 335 is George Argyros, 79, from Newport Beach. The real estate and stock investor is worth $2.1 billion. He’s tied with investor Alec Gores, 63, from Beverly Hills and Snapchat executive Evan Spiegel, 26, from Los Angeles.

No. 361 is Bruce Karsh, 60, from Los Angeles. The investor is worth $1.9 billion.

At 374th is Bobby Murphy, 28, a Snapchat co-founder from Venice tied with Sarah MacMillan, 62, from Los Angeles, a Cargill heiress. Both are estimated to be worth $1.8 billion.

And ranked 395th is Beverly Hills investor Nicolas Berggruen, worth $1.7 billion.
