The City of Springfield has launched a new web mapping tool for residents.

The City of Springfield has launched an online web mapping tool for residents who want to know what kinds of projects are planned and underway around town.

The new tool was developed using ESRI ArcGIS Online, and Springfield Planning Director Grant Green created the files for it using the city’s most relevant 2016-2017 site plan and subdivision plat submittals, according to a release from the city.

With assistance from ESRI Representative Christy Thiem and ESRI staff, Green used the web mapping feature to add this information to the City of Springfield website, the release said.

“I hope this and the other maps will be a useful feature for the public, realtors, and economic development.” Green said in the release.  “If citizens are curious what is being built, or what is happening in the city, they can visit our website and find major projects that have been approved or under construction.

“With a city of this size, we are limited with GIS resources.  This is mostly an after-hours side project for me being focused on Planning and Codes during the day, but it is an example of what we can make available to the public.”

In addition to the site plan and subdivision plat information, staff also added transportation, greenway and parks projects to the tool. Two other new web-based maps include a zoning map with parcel information and a traffic count map using data from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, the release noted.

City utilities are also accessing GIS to use locational mapping and attribute information to keep track of infrastructure and customer information, though that information is not directly available to the public due to Homeland Security concerns, the release said.

Having utility and related information is also helpful with site location for developers and future economic development, city leaders say.

Springfield Gas Safety and Training Manager Sam Andavazo and Engineering Technician Stephanie Brown have been working to develop a system-wide inventory for lines, meters and other information, the release said. It also noted that Springfield’s gas system covers much of Robertson County.

Steps are also being taken within the Springfield Electric Department to map utilities, the release said.
