Wildfires have burned more than 900,000 acres in Washington, killing three firefighters, displacing thousands of people and animals, destroying untold amounts of property and sending a haze of smoke across the state.

The fires have grown at a terrifying rate, due in part to “unhealthy” forests choked by drought. The Okanogan complex fire is the largest in state history, beating a record set by last year’s Carlton complex.

President Obama declared a state of emergency and ordered federal aid for the response efforts on Aug. 21.

The animation below shows the growth of the fires since July 29, 2015.
