Evacuations start this weekend in Cedar Rapids
The city of Cedar Rapids asks anyone in the expected flood zone to evacuate by 8:00 p.m. Sunday. Red Cross and other volunteers will assist notifying residents in the areas affected up to a 28-foot flood. Businesses in the areas are also required to close.The 28-foot evacuation level includes downtown to about 5th Street Southeast; The New Bo area to about 8th Street Southeast and Otis Road Southeast; the Czech Village between 19th Ave SW to I-380; as far as 10th Street SW past I-380, in the Time Check area as far as 13th Street NW and all of Ellis Rd NW and some areas in Ushers Ferry area.Police also plan to enforce a curfew for the flood and evacuation areas from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. every morning. The Iowa National Guard will help patrol the flood zones, along with police from other areas of the state. Police will have 73 checkpoints to help block access to flood areas.The city hopes to be able to reopen those flood evacuation zones after seven days.The Linn County Jail will start evacuating today.Once the flood waters recede, safety inspection teams will go into the flood zone to assess when residents will be able to get back into their homes.The city says it is preparing for flood levels of up to 28 feet as a precaution, even though the forecast calls for a 25-foot crest on Tuesday morning.The city also plans to restrict access to much of downtown and other flood areas to only essential staff and people as protection systems get installed.As of now, the city is calling for more volunteers, but is asking others to stay away from the downtown area and other flood areas."I understand the curiosity, but the increased traffic and pedestrians make it difficult to protect the property of those directly affected by the events," said City Manager Jeff Pomeranz.Anyone wishing to volunteer can call 2-1-1 to request or find out how to volunteer. The city has sandbagging stations set up in Ellis Park, the former K-Mart parking Lot at 16th Ave and Williams Boulevard Southwest and at Hawkeye Downs. The city plans to install lights so those stations will be able to operate around the clock. Several viewers reported those sites were running out of sandbags, but the city says it is working to deliver more sandbags to those areas.The city has installed Hesco barriers and sandbags on both sides of the river, which includes blockading areas around city hall and raising berms along Ellis Boulevard. The city says to expect sudden road closures in those areas where flood walls and barriers are going up.The city says water and sewer systems are protected from the projected flood levels.
